Clinical care
MUV includes Europe’s largest university hospital, the Vienna General Hospital (AKH), with approximately 2,200 beds and a main campus spanning 240,000 m2. The university also has a network of 11 affiliated teaching hospitals in Vienna. The AKH maintains an International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 9001:2008 certification, a globally-recognized indicator for hospital quality management.
The hospital is a leading center in organ transplantation, oncologic care, traumatology, neurosciences, cardiovascular medicine, and immunology. In particular, MUV has developed a reputation in the functional and molecular imaging disciplines – MUV is equipped with a 7-tesla magnetic resonance imaging device and has installed a second positron emission tomography (PET) scanning device.
The AKH is an invaluable resource for operations, training, and specialty programs for MUVI project partners due to its tremendous breadth of services and patient volumes. The hospital has over 100,000 inpatient admissions and 1.8 million outpatient encounters annually, and stages nearly 50,000 surgical procedures yearly. The AKH staff includes an estimated 9,000 total staff, of which 1,600 are physicians. The AKH houses 21 intensive care units and 51 operating theatres, and has 26 university clinics, 4 clinical institutes, 36 clinical departments, 68 general outpatient departments, and 337 specialized outpatient departments, representing a broad range of specialties.
Aside from the healthcare services provided by the AKH, MUV also offers high-quality dental services through the Bernhard Gottlieb University Clinic of Dentistry, one of the largest dental facilities in Europe. The Bernhard Gottlieb University Clinic of Dentistry cares for nearly 20,000 patients yearly on an outpatient basis and is an ideal setting for dentistry education and research.
